What does it include?

For this 2 hour class, I will guide you through all the steps, from the initial drawing to building up layers and adding the finishing touches.

I usually use Renesans watercolours and provide them to my students as part of the lesson, along with watercolour paper and other materials such as photographs and learning resources. However, you are more than welcome to bring your own supplies if you prefer.

Watercolour Class: Botanical Garland

Explore the joy of loose, expressive watercolour painting as we create a beautiful botanical garland inspired by the delicate flowers and foliage in the reference image.

In this relaxed class, we’ll look at how to simplify flowers and leaves into confident, fluid brushstrokes, allowing the paint to flow and blend naturally. You’ll learn how to build a harmonious palette of soft corals, pinks, peaches, greens and touches of blue, while experimenting with layering, transparency and texture.

We’ll work on arranging individual painted elements into a flowing wreath-like composition, leaving plenty of beautiful white space in the centre. The focus will be on expressive mark-making rather than botanical perfection, making this a lovely project for both beginners and those wanting to loosen up their watercolour style.

You’ll learn:

  • Loose, gestural techniques for painting flowers and foliage
  • How to mix fresh, harmonious botanical colours
  • Creating depth through transparent washes and layering
  • Painting expressive leaves with simple brush movements
  • How to balance a floral composition and use negative space
  • Adding small details and texture to bring the painting to life

Come along, slow down and enjoy the freedom of painting botanicals with a light, spontaneous touch. No previous watercolour experience is necessary—just bring your paints, brushes and a willingness to experiment.
