Watercolour Lifting & Masking Powder – Hydrophobic Texture & Resist Effect Medium

This versatile watercolour masking and lifting powder offers two powerful techniques for creating controlled highlights and textured effects in painting.

Apply the powder directly onto dry paper before painting to create a masking-fluid-like resist effect. Once applied, the first layer of watercolour can be painted immediately over the treated surface. The powder prevents pigment from adhering, preserving bright white areas and revealing the natural texture of the paper underneath.

Alternatively, sprinkle the powder onto a wet watercolour wash and gently work it into the surface. This creates an organic, irregular lifting and granulation effect, ideal for expressive textures, atmospheric backgrounds, and experimental watercolour techniques.

Thanks to its hydrophobic properties, the powder resists water-based pigment, producing crisp highlights and natural-looking negative space. Once dry, the treated areas can be easily removed with an eraser and reworked or repainted with watercolour.

Key Features:

  • Produces clean white highlights and paper texture reveals
